Sharks become ocean observers to help improve hurricane forecasts

Researchers at the University of Delaware are testing sharks as mobile ocean observers. Small CTD sensors attached to their dorsal fins measure conductivity, temperature and depth. When a shark surfaces, the tag can transmit data to satellites. Because heat stored in the upper ocean can influence hurricane intensity, these observations could eventually help improve forecasts.

米デラウェア大学の研究チームは、サメを海の“移動式観測員”として活用する研究を進めています。サメの背びれに取り付けたCTDセンサーが、水温・塩分に関係する電気伝導度・深さを測定。サメが海面近くに来ると、そのデータを衛星へ送ります。海の表層に蓄えられた熱はハリケーンの強さに関係するため、こうした観測が将来の予測精度向上につながる可能性があります。
